The Bedford Fire District, like the Bedford Fire Department, was organized in January of 1923 following an ice house fire in Bedford Village.

The first Board of Fire Commissioners was headed by Edith Colgate as Chair, well ahead of the era of equal rights for women; she kept Bedford's first fire truck in her garage until the firehouse could be built!
