New York State law requires that fire commissioner elections be held on the second Tuesday in December.
The next election for the position of Fire Commissioner will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the Bedford Fire Department, 34 Village Green, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Absentee ballots for this election will become available after the filing deadline for candidacy has passed.
To vote in fire commissioner elections, a person must be a registered voter who has been a resident of the fire district for at least 30 days and who is registered to vote at their Bedford Village Fire District address.
There are five (5) fire commissioners at any given time, on an overlapping term schedule so that one seat comes up each year. A fire commissioner must be a US Citizen, a resident of the fire district, and never been convicted of arson in any degree.
A candidate for Fire Commissioner must submit a petition signed by at least 25 registered voters of the district to the Secretary of the Fire District at least 20 days in advance of the election. Petitions and details may be obtained from the Secretary, whose contact information can be found in the "Contact Us" section of this website.
Filing deadline for the 2022 Fire Commissioner Election is November 23, 2022. This election is for a seat on the Board of Fire Commissioners for a term of five (5) years, to commence on January 1, 2023 and end on December 31, 2027.
