March 2023 New Firehouse Update: Next Steps

March 1, 2023

The new building looks done, and is almost there, with small punch list items left to complete. You’ll know that it’s finished when we paint the front door red!

So, what’s next?

We’ve started moving equipment and supplies to the new building in preparation for transferring operations to 550 Old Post Road.

Operational transfer will happen on Sunday, March 5th in the afternoon, with a fire service tradition called a “Push In.” The term “Push In” predates combustion engines: after a fire, the fire wagons would park outside the firehouse to unhitch the horses, and then be pushed into the apparatus bay.

This Sunday, we will lower the flag at 34 Village Green and drive our trucks and walk our firefighters and EMTs to 550 Old Post Road, where we will raise the flag, pose for a department photo to commemorate the move, and enter our new headquarters. We will hang up our gear in our assigned lockers and get ready to respond from 550 to the next emergency call that comes in.

In March and April, we will be refining our operational set-up in the new building, furnishing it, and working on the longterm landscaping plans. We are very aware that the landscaping is not currently what it needs to be. Phase 2 coming soon!

In May, we will hold a community ribbon cutting event open to all, which will be the first of numerous opportunities for residents to come in and tour the new headquarters. We are very much looking forward to showing everyone the final product: the filtration systems and space to work safely, the ample storage for access to equipment, showers for our female first responders, and numerous training features.

Watch our website, our social media, and local news coverage for event dates and times. We will endeavor to fit different work and school schedules so that all may attend.

See you soon!
